Art is one of the most important subjects to help boys grow in confidence. There is always a positive element to highlight, no matter what a student creates. When a boy knows that his creative work is acknowledged, his self-esteem and self-confidence grow—and with that, his ability to do academic work in the classroom.
In the Art department, we adopt a holistic approach. Boys are exposed to diverse artworks to instil a love and appreciation for different points of view. There are no “ridiculous” ideas in the art space. A culture of respect for each other allows boys to feel safe to share their “crazy” ideas.
Our philosophy of “it’s not a problem to have a problem” frees children from the desperate need to make everything perfect. Our boys learn how to make a mistake and turn it around creatively into something positive.
All artwork is displayed on boards around the school and in the theatre. We have a totally inclusive policy—every completed piece is valued and displayed. We also have an art exhibition where the best work from a boy is presented to the Cordwalles community. We can also guide and prepare our talented artists to apply for art scholarships at high schools.
Every boy has an hour lesson per week where I expose them to many different materials and genres of art, from spray paint to wire and recyclable materials. Boys are exposed to sculpture in the new pottery room, where they work with clay and do wheel work.
During Art and Culture week, children meet visiting artists who are specialists in their fields.
By the end of seven years of training in the art department, each boy has been exposed to a wide variety of materials and experienced many different techniques, allowing them to find their strengths in one or more of the mediums.
The Mkhulisi Creative Centre is a spacious facility that equips the boys to discover their creative potential. Along with an area for experimental painting and tables where sketching and drawing take place, the centre is home to two kilns and five pottery wheels.
Art teaches so many skills and gives boys the chance to talk through important life lessons.
Although there are art prizes at the annual academic Prize Giving, far more significant than this achievement is the love for the process of art-making. In the art department, we take the focus off the end product and rather tune in to the process of learning.
