Drama at Cordwalles

CORDIES CREATIVITY

Drama helps boys develop self-confidence and many other skills that set them up for success in today’s society.

Drama lessons provide relief from the confines of a formal classroom environment, giving the boys an opportunity to express themselves in a more physical way. But Drama is not a time in which boys get to ‘run wild’; it is a structured lesson that requires discipline. The subject develops not only boys’ performance skills, but also their personal and social skills.

Cordwalles’ Drama facilities include a movement room, a fully-equipped theatre, and a fully-stocked costume and prop room. The theatre has superior sound and lighting facilities.

Drama as a Subject

We cover various skills in Drama lessons, including mime, movement, improvisation, characterisation, choral verse, verbal dynamics, costume and make-up design, and public speaking skills.

The boys do a lot of the classwork in groups, which encourages tolerance, acceptance, public speaking skills, management/negotiation skills, patience and the ability to think creatively and ‘on the spot’—skills needed throughout one’s life.

Drama-as-an-Extra-Curricular

Drama as an Extra-Curricular

Cordwalles offers Drama as an extra-curricular activity to extend boys who would like more opportunities to improve their performance talents and skills and build a firmer foundational base in the performing arts.

Boys who prefer and excel in cultural activities such as Drama are given a self-esteem boost and develop character and resilience.

Performances

Every boy in the school gets an opportunity to perform on stage at some point in the year. These presentations and productions allow boys to put the skills they have learned in Drama lessons to use.

  • Grades RR and R: Nativity Play
  • Grades 1-3: Junior Primary Play (a musical) and Grandparents’ Day
  • Grades 4-7: Grade Plays and Senior Grandparents’ Day
  • Grade 7: Major Production – a musical in which common themes are linked together to culminate in the fun and excitement of this much-awaited production.

Boys who take Drama as a co-curricular have been involved in inter-school productions and performing arts workshops.
